NEEDS AND GOALS

To advance the Snackability app and test its effectiveness for improving diet quality and weight, we are seeking sponsorship (financial) support. This level involves testing this app among college students to determine if it can improve diet quality and weight over a period of time. College students were selected as they are high users of snacks and at the same time, they are at a prime stage to set preferences for future purchasing and eating behaviors. In addition, testing it among students at FIU allows us to be cost effective.

Our future goal is to have this app available nationwide so that all Americans can use it when selecting snacks. Initially, we will market the app among youth in the US. In 2017, there were 15.5 million high school students from 24,000 high schools and 20 million college students (most around 18-24 y) from 7,021 higher education institutions24. Statistics from 2018 shows that 94% of young adults 18-29 year old own a smartphone25, with an average of 35 apps used monthly and 8 apps used daily26. Also, millennials spend more than 3 hours per day in apps26. A total of 59% of smartphone users download and use health related apps19. It is expected that there will be a 25% increase in global app downloads between 2018 and 202225. Because many universities are part of the Healthier Campus Initiative, we aim to contact the wellness office to initially market our app.
